RE: Belgium
Dr. William Arceneaux, president of the Fondation CODOFIL, with the
assistance of Mary Belleau, organized a gala reception recently held in
Baton Rouge at the Old State Capitol to commemorate the 25th anniversary of
the
international collaboration between the State of Louisiana and the Louisiana
Community of Belgium. Mr. Philippe Suinen, General Commissioner,
International Relations of the French Community of Belgium, attended the
event. Eliane Levaque, Permanent Representative from Belgium to
Louisiana,
was lauded for her long-time work in promoting French in Louisiana.
Prior
to the evening's festivities, a business meeting was held in the afternoon
with
members of the BESE Board and Superintendent of Education Cecil Picard;
those discussions focused on: 1) The Louisiana Commission on French; 2)
French as
a second language and the French immersion programs; 3) The French teacher
contract and 4) The Fall 2002 meeting in Brussels, Belgium.
The renewal of the international agreement between the State of Louisiana
and France on one hand, and between the State of Louisiana and the French
Community of Belgium on the other hand, will take place in Paris and
Brussels during the Fall of 2002. Warren A. Perrin, President of
CODOFIL, Keith
Johnson, BESE Board and Superintendent Cecil Picard will lead the Louisiana
delegation. In anticipation of these meetings, Ms. Levaque
announced that
Mr. Yves Guérin, General Inspector form the French Ministry of Education,
and Mr. Robert Briquet, Representative of the French Community of Belgium,
visited with teachers in Louisiana. They were accompanied by Mr.
Bernard
Dubernet, French pedagogical Attaché, and Mr. Marc Drugmand, Belgian
pedagogical Attaché.
