Louisiana Purchase Family Celebration
SPECIAL EDITION

GREETINGS: With the school year drawing to a close and with summer 2003 at our doorstep, CAFA is deeply involved with the upcoming “Louisiana Purchase Family Celebration” to be held in Rayne, Louisiana on June 13-14-15, 2003.  This newsletter will deal primarily with this rapidly approaching important event.

MERCI TO FAMILIES:  The CAFA Officers and Board wish to express our sincere appreciation for the great turnout at the May 17th meeting held in Scott.  The family organizations have been very cooperative relative to planning  the Louisiana Purchase Celebration and we are very grateful for this, but at this time what we need is for every family organization to work at getting their members to attend  on Saturday June, 14th and  Sunday June 15th.  So the objective and theme for the next three weeks is “GET YOUR MEMBERS TO ATTEND”.  With  the cooperation of the various family organizations we will have a great turnout.  Remember this will be the first time that all the families have the opportunity to share an event of this importance together.  Lets make the best of this opportunity and work hard to pass the word to friends and family.

BOOTH DISPLAYS:  There are 26 different family organizations that have reserved booth space, five of those reserving 2 booths each. Each family will decorate and have their own agenda as far as decoration and display.  There will be genealogy, history, and  items for sale by each of the different families.  There are also commercial booths and genealogy society booths that will offer information on travel and genealogy.  There are three non-profit organization booths including CMA 2004, Acadian Memorial, and LSU Genetics Research Center that will offer information relative to their area.  The people involved in these display booths have been working hard to make their displays informational so please make an effort to visit each booth while you are attending the celebration. There will be information galore available to all.

GREAT ENTERTAINMENT: We have lined up some great entertainment starting with the Acadia Parish Louisiana Purchase Chorale group which will perform on Saturday morning, followed by an impressive opening ceremonies featuring the Marines, Girl Scouts, and French Immersion students. During the afternoon we have Dave Petitjean, the Feu Follet Band, Jam Session by Larry Miller and friends, and closing the day with Terry Huval and the Jambalaya Band.   On Sunday we will have a Catholic Mass in French starting at 10:00 am at the Civic Center.  On Sunday afternoon the action shifts to St. Martinville for the dedication of the Acadian Deportation Cross at the Acadian Memorial starting at 2:00 pm.  This should be a very emotional ceremony which we highly recommend.

GOOD FOOD !!. There will be Cajun food for the Saturday noon and night meals. The noon meal will cost $5.00 and feature Jambalaya prepared by the Richard Family. The night meal will cost $7.00 and feature crawfish etouffee prepared by the Broussard Family. To help the cooks better prepare, please advise your members to purchase their meal tickets early on Saturday morning.

RV CAMPING SITES:  Rayne, Louisiana is known by several slogans.  One is “The Frog Capital of the World” while another is “Louisiana City of Murals”.  But for those of you that travel in RV’s or campers, the city is becoming known as “Cajun Country Camper Convention City” with facilities for 622 campers located next to the Rayne Civic Center.  All the camper sites are being held available for those wishing to attend the Louisiana Purchase Celebration.  To reserve space for the Celebration contact:  Fenwick Fontenot at (337) 942-8624 or e-mail < fenbab@charter.net >.
