ANNUAL MEETING: CAFA’s annual meeting was held on November 3, 2001, at the New Iberia Recreation Center located in New Iberia with approximately 75 members and guests attending. Board members in attendance were: Ronald Blanchard, James Bourque, Johnny Comeaux, Earline Conover, Dudley Duhon, Daniel Guidry, Woody Hebert, Loretta Jambon, Lea Anne LeJeune, Antoine Le Blanc, Shirley Le Blanc, Ruby Melancon, Eddie Richard, and Loubert Trahan. Betty Ducharme was unable to attend. Guest speaker was Kirby Jambon, French Immersion Teacher from Lafayette Parish Schools, representing CODOFIL. Mr. Jambon spoke on the needs of the French Immersion Program in Louisiana by stressing that the commitment to French Immersion in Louisiana is strong and growing but it is always endangered. Eddie Richard, Chairman of the French Immersion committee, then gave a report on CAFA’s involvement with the program during the past year. He stated that the greatest need is for materials of instruction and CAFA family member participation in providing member resources to the different French Immersion Programs. During the last school year, a total of $6,798.00 was distributed to various French Immersion Programs. There is currently $17,316.00 available for this school year. A major contributor was the Government of Quebec with a $10,000.00 donation to CAFA for use during this current school year. Eddie urged the members to continue encouraging the various families to participate in the French Immersion Project. In other business Loubert Trahan, Treasurer, reported that 40 family organizations now belong to the CAFA organization. In addition Woody Hebert, representing the Hebert Family Association, made a $1000.00 presentation to Eddie Richard for use by the French Immersion Programs. James Bourque then gave a report on organization of family reunions in Nova Scotia for 2004. A short Board of Directors meeting was held following adjournment of the membership meeting. Other topics discussed such as Celebration 2003 and CMA 2004 reunions will be covered in next paragraphs. The meeting was called to order after which the students from Myrtle Place Elem. School., Lafayette, La. led the group in reciting the "Pledge of Allegiance" in French. The principal of that school, Mrs. Lemelle later addressed the group and gave a heartfelt presentation on the merits of French Immersion. She stated that any student that is bi-lingual habitually scores at least 10 points higher than a student that is not bi-lingual, regardless of social or economic background of previous grade point average. The celebration activity will involve all of the active organized Acadian family organizations and will be known as “Louisiana Purchase-Acadian Reunion Day”. It will consist of a two day reunion involving Acadian family organizations and their members at a major site in Lafayette such as Blackham Coliseum. The second day is planned to be in St. Martinville and will include a Mass and other programs. CAFA will coordinate the activity which will include genealogy, history, food and entertainment. It will provide a setting for all Acadians to come together at one place to observe and celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase in a grand fashion. Special guest from other states making up the Louisiana Purchase and from the Nova Scotia 2004 Congres Mondial Acadian Committee will be invited to be part of the celebration. CAFA has submitted a revised proposed budget of $47,000.00 that we are asking the state committee to approve from state funds dedicated for the celebration. Many family organizations have committed and are planning to be a part of this activity which would serve as a primer for the CMA 2004 in Nova Scotia. Family associations are asked to start making plans now. As soon as we get approval information we will come out with the information in a special newsletter and on the website. SAINT FAMILLE CEMETERY: CAFA recently received a $1000.00 donation to be passed on to the St. Famille Cemetery group in Nova Scotia. This came from H.
