"Beausoleil" MEETING/REUNION
The meeting was called to order by President Richard Broussard at 10:05 at
which time he called for someone to lead the gathering in the Pledge of
Allegiance to our Flag followed by a short prayer for all gathered,
especially the veterans of our many wars of the past and present. Beatrice Broussard Frederick then introduced the speaker for the occasion, noted author and speaker, Jim Bradshaw. Jim is a noted writer of Acadian Folklore and likes to call "A Spade - A Spade." Mr. Bradshaw proceeded to speak about the necessity of everybody in Acadiana interviewing their elder family members about their exploits in their service days, whether it be WWII, Korean, Vietnam, Gulf War as well as the present Iraq war. As he so succinctly put it, once these vets are gone, their stories and remembrances will be gone with them. If at all possible, have a tape recorder handy to record their conversations. Once you get them started it will be easier and easier, and you will be surprised how many in their family will rejoice hearing some of these accounts, since they may have never heard them before. Just as important, said Mr. Bradshaw, was the recording of our own family history and stories. Many things have happened in each family that the young are not aware of. These have to be recorded for posterity. They provide a rich history of each of our own family – showing who we are, how we got where we are, and really what makes each family so individually different, yet so alike with the others around in so many ways. Above all he said, get all the old pictures you can. And by all means, write the name of the people in the pictures on the back. A few years from now, nobody will remember who they are and those names will be lost forever. Although Mr. Bradshaw’s immediate family are English, he has Vincent and Broussard among other Acadian Family Blood in his veins. After Mr. Bradshaw’s memorable speech, others were called upon to
speak a few words about the topics most close to their heart. Mr. James Bourque, President of Confederation of Associations of Families Acadian, gave an accounting of CAFA’s ongoing funding for the French Immersion Programs in over 20 schools in Acadiana. He also spoke about a bus tour being developed by CAFA for Acadians to travel to New Brunswick for CMA 2009. Mrs. Shirley T. LeBlanc, President of Acadian Museum in St. Martinville gave an account of the upcoming events that will take place in St. Martinville, particularly at the Acadian Museum. Mitch Conover gave a short dissertation on the Beausoleil Family’s funding of the French Immersion Program at Myrtle Place Elem. School – the buying of French Encycopedias' for the students. The next item on the agenda was the awarding of the annual "Famille Beausoleil" award to the woman and to the man most deserving by their continued support and actions to keep the Broussard Beausoleil Association functioning and prospering. Irving "Bulue" Broussard was awarded the Beausoleil Award, and Emily B. Lanoux was awarded the "Dame Beausoleil" plaque. Having a few moments to kill, Allen Simon was called upon to render a little Acadian humor which added a little levity to the occasion. President Richard Broussard adjourned the meeting and reunion with a short prayer before meals, and invited all in attendance to enjoy a delicious chicken and sausage gumbo, desert and soft drinks, all prepared for the occasion by the cooks, as shown.
