250th Anniversary of Acadians’ arrival & Grand Reveil Acadien

2015 will mark the 250th Anniversary of the Acadians arrival in Louisiana.  Grand Reveil Acadien [GRA2015] activities are being planned from October 3–12, 2015 throughout south Louisiana.

250th Anniversary of St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church         1765 - 2015

November 11, 2014, the Feast of Saint Martin, will be the opening of the anniversary year.  Other 2015 events:

bulletDecember 25 – Midnight Mass – Closing of the anniversary year

Founded in 1765 by Acadian exiles, St. Martin de Tours Church in St. Martinville, LA “is one of the oldest Catholic churches in America and the third oldest in Louisiana.” 

            “St. Martin de Tours Church has been the center of religious and cultural activities of St. Martinville and the Attakapas Nation since colonial times.”

Breaux family gathering

“Save the Date” – Saturday, October 10, 2015.  In conjunction with Grand Reveil Acadien, Breaux du Monde Association is working on plans for a family gathering in Breaux Bridge, LA.  Additional information will be available later. 

New Acadia Project

The Lafayette Genealogical Society will have a presentation by Dr. Mark A. Rees, head of the ULL Department of Sociology, Anthropology & Child and Family Studies, on the NEW ACADIA PROJECT.  The presentation will be on Thursday, November 20, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. at the South Regional Branch Library, 6101 Johnston Street, Lafayette, LA.

      "PROJECT NOUVELLE-ACADIE is an archaeological/historical initiative that aims to locate the mid-eighteenth-century settlements of the first large group of Acadian exiles in Louisiana.  Their descendants today comprise over 500,000 Cajuns in Louisiana and throughout the world.”

“Footsteps in Time”

Gayle Breaux Smith has been invited to make her Breaux family presentation “Footsteps in Time” in Breaux Bridge.  Her talk will be on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at the Council on Aging, 391 Cannery Road, Breaux Bridge, LA.

(The building faces the Breaux Bridge Highway – Highway 94.)

Breakfast with Breaux cousins in Texas

On Sunday, October 12, 2014 twenty-two Breaux cousins gathered at the Senior Citizen Center in Bridge City, TX.  Paige & Darrin Bigler graciously hosted the event again this year for Breaux du Monde, preparing a wonderful breakfast.  Calice Breaux coordinated the morning, and his son Danny made a presentation on their trip to Canada this summer for the Congres Mondial. 

After the breakfast, participants attended the Mass at the Beausoleil House in Port Neches.
